Mobility scooters are an everyday essential for many Australians. Reaching speeds of up to 10km/h and providing superior comfort, mobility scooters allow the elderly and people living with disabilities to move from point A to point B with ease.
At Active Mobility Systems, we offer a wide range of mobility scooters and solutions to make travel simple. We even have models that can be folded and neatly tucked into the back of your car for easy transport and storage.
But what is the best mobility scooter for your needs, or your patient’s or family member’s needs? There are many different kinds of mobility scooters to choose from, and each scooter is suitable for different disabilities and terrains.
We’re here to make buying a mobility scooter simple. Here, we explore all the different types of mobility scooters available on the market, convenient accessories and add-ons you can purchase, and how to claim your new scooter through the NDIS.
Types of Mobility Scooters
While there are many types of mobility scooters available, each model has its advantages and disadvantages depending on your specific circumstances and needs. Here are some of the most common types to consider when buying a mobility scooter.
Compact Mobility Scooters
Compact mobility scooters can be disassembled or folded for easier transportation and storage. Most compact scooters have simple designs and features for those who don’t plan to tackle heavier terrains and use their mobility scooter from point A to point B, like heading down to the shops.
Most compact scooters come with a standard basket on the front, meaning you can store your shopping bags or groceries with ease.
However, due to the lightweight and foldable design, compact mobility scooters cannot take as much weight as other every day or heavy-duty mobility scooters. The Pride Revo 2.0, for example, can only take on 170kg of weight while the Shoprider Getabout, the lightest that we stock at 27kg, can hold only up to 90kg.
All in all, compact mobility scooters are an excellent choice for those who want a light, convenient solution for travel and casual use. For higher weights and durability, every day or heavy-duty scooters are a superior choice.
Everyday Mobility Scooters
As the name suggests, everyday mobility scooters are used for everyday use. While everyday scooters are heavier than their compact cousins, they are not suitable for those who are aiming to tackle heavy terrain. However, they can manage most hills with ease.
These mobility scooters are made for the elderly and people living with disabilities who want to get out and about without the hassle of packing up their scooter and taking it to and from their home.
Heavy-duty Mobility Scooters
Bariatric scooters are designed for bariatric patients. These scooters are heavily built and have a lot of power, meaning they’re suitable for traversing through hills and tough terrains. Like most mobility scooters, bariatric scooters also have a front basket so you can take your scooter to the shops for your weekly groceries.
Being heavy-duty scooters, it does mean they are bigger than your average scooter. This means that your heavy-duty scooter most likely will not be able to fit into the boot of a car and you may struggle with short, sharp turns or narrow roads.
