The National Disability Insurance Scheme provides all Australians under the age of 65 who have a permanent and significant disability and significant disability with the reasonable and necessary supports they need to enjoy an ordinary life. The NDIS helps people with disability achieve their goals. Learning the “NDIS language” will help participants understand the NDIS Scheme and how it can help and benefit the participant.
Approved Plan
Every participant has their own Plan. Their approved plan says what money and support they will receive from the NDIA. Once the plan is approved, they are eligible to use the money and support from their plan.
Carer
Carer is a person that provides care (personal care) and support. In most cases, carer is usually a family member (parent, children), who does not receive any income or is not contracted with the NDIS participant.
Disability
Disability is a physical or mental condition that limits a person’s functioning (movements, senses, activities).
Eligibility
Eligibility describes whether a person is able to become a NDIS participant or not.
Funded Supports
Funded Support is any support that NDIA pays for through a participants plan. It includes equipment or activities, which participant use.
Guardian
A person in a formal caring role, acting for a person with a disability. Parents are usually guardians.
Informal Supports
The supports participants get from the people around them. Informal Support can be non-financial support, for example helping with the shopping or financial support such as fundraising.
Local Area Coordinator(s) (LAC)
Local Area Coordinators are local organisations that helps the participant, their family members and carers to access the NDIS. They help participants to write and manage their NDIS plan. LAC work in partnership with the NDIA.
Market
A list of providers offering products and\or services to NDIS participants.
Nominee
Nominee is a person who is appointed to act and make decision for NDIS participant who does not have a parent or family member.
NDIA
National Disability Insurance Agency
National Disability Insurance Scheme, a way of providing support for Australians with disabilities.
Participant
A person with disability that meets the requirements of the NDIS.
Registered Provider
A disability support provider that has met the NDIS requirements for qualifications, approvals, experience, capacity and quality standards to provide a product or service.
Self Management Funding
Participants are managing their funds. It means they manage their payments for support/ services and they providers directly.
