Wheelchair cushions help prevent pressure sores from occurring as these can be painful and distressing for users who stay in their wheelchairs for long periods of time.
Active Mobility work alongside many brands such as Sunrise Medical to bring you the best wheelchair cushion for your, or your clients, needs. Along with electric wheelchairs Sunrise Medical also sells the JAY range cushions, which helps prevent pressure sores.
However with different types of cushions in the range, which one is the best for you or your client? Read our brief explanation below.
JAY Fusion
Offering high level pressure protection while still providing both support and stability the Fusion features a multi-layer pre-contoured closed cell foam base with a soft foam overlay. This provides a comfortable, yet high level of positioning for users.
Much like the Ion and the Union, the Fusion also has an inner cover that assists with incontinence and moisture management. Meanwhile the outer cover provides good air flow while the X-static silver threads minimise bacteria build up and odour.
Ideal for users who are uncomfortable, need postural support and are at high risk of pressure sores. The Fusion’s pre-contoured base encourages a neutral pelvic position while the fluid pad allows for direct immersion into the cushion – dispersing weight across the users’ bottom and thighs. While users still need to be able to perform weight shifts, they can be dependent on others.
JAY Ion
The Jay Ion is a multi-layer cushion which provides comfort and minimal positioning to users who are uncomfortable in their chair and have a low pressure risk.
Made from a soft visco memory foam top layer the inner cover assists with incontinence and moisture maintenance.
Meanwhile the outer cover provides good air flow whilst the X-static silver threads help to minimise bacteria build up, which reduces odor.
Available in various sizes with a weight capacity of 136kg the Jay Ion provides minimal postural support as it’s ideal for users who require a comfortable cushion to sit on for short periods of time; usually less than 3 hours at a time and are still able to perform weight shifts in the chair.
JAY Union
A step up from the JAY Ion the Union is a versatile cushion that’s low maintenance. It’s comfortable and provides skin protection as well as moderate postural support with a weight capacity of 136kg.
This makes the cushion ideal for users who are uncomfortable in their chair, sit for longer periods of time; usually less than 4 hours at a time and require some postural support, but are still able to weight shift with/without assistance. The cushion is also ideal for those that are at moderate risk of pressure injuries.
The Union features a multi-layer base with pre-contoured high-resistance foam with a Soft Visco memory foam overlay. The base provides a gentle, but moderate level of postural support by encouraging a neutral pelvic position.
The cushion’s inner cover assist with incontinence and moisture management while the outer cover provides good air flow while minimising bacteria and odour build up thanks to the X-static silver threads.
By no means is this our complete range of wheelchair cushions nor is it our entire range of products, which includes power lift chairs, lifting hoists and electric wheelchairs.
