Walking frames help provide an additional level of balance and support for those that would usually have trouble doing so. Coming in a variety of designs (fixed, folding and adjustable) it can be confusing to know which one to choose.
However the important thing to know is that choosing the right walking frame depends on the needs of the person and therefore the walking frame must meet or exceed that need.
Firstly make sure that the walking frame is easy to use and comfortable, ideally it would be best suited for your height and weight. Try a few models to get a feel for it before purchasing a walking frame, there’s nothing worse than buying one and finding out that it’s not the right fit for you.
Make sure that its handgrip is level with where your wrist crease is if you’re standing normally. This will help determine the best height, after that you want between a 15 – 30 degree bend at your elbow to maximise comfort and safety.
Another thing that you might want to consider is if the frame is going to be stored or transported along with you. If it is then it’s best to buy one that can either be disassembled or folded easily so that you can put it in the back of your car for convenience.
The environment is another factor that needs to be considered as floor mats, power cords and water hoses will need to be removed if the walkers are going to be used. Doorways should be big enough to accommodate the walking frames and have sufficient circulation space while caution needs to be used on wet or uneven grounds.
All 4 wheel walking frames have seats made from padded fabric, wood or plastic. For comfort and stability try each of them out and see which one you are comfortable with; also make sure that the height is optimal so that getting up and sitting down is not a problem.
Most modern frames come with a bag or basket, either at the front or under the seat. When purchasing make sure that it’s within easy reach and if it needs to be taken off before folding. Some of them also comes with zippers or in hard to reach places.
At the end of the day it all comes down to whether or not the walking frame does what you need it to do. Just ensure that the measurements are all correct, it can maintain your weight and that you’re comfortable in using it and you’re good to go.
